Domestic Abuse and Immigration
Some victims of domestic abuse are afraid to seek advice and support as they have concerns about their immigration status, or because they do not have ‘Recourse to Public Funds’, meaning that they can’t claim benefits. If you are dependent on your husband or wife for your right to stay in the UK, then you are in a very vulnerable situation if the relationship is abusive and your status can be used against you.
If you or someone you know is a victim of domestic abuse but is concerned about seeking help or leaving their partner due to their immigration status, the Sheffield DACT website provides useful information on these issues. Alternatively, you can contact the domestic abuse helpline for your area and we will talk you through your options.
